Carolina – The Light That Breathes
It was a scorching July day in Calabria. In my parents’ house, while time seemed to stand still, I was leafing through some photos of my little Carolina. She was sleeping next to me, curled up in her wicker basket like a treasured jewel. I alternated between pictures of her and the ultrasound scans, following with awe the visual tale of those nine months of waiting: from an undefined trace of light to a perfect little being.
I had been present at every check-up, a witness to every heartbeat, every step, every breath taking shape. I still remember the explosive emotion we felt when we discovered she was a girl, during the seventeenth week. Now she was there, in my arms and in my thoughts, silent as a prayer.
With my mind adrift in that stream of images and sensations, I began doodling absentmindedly on a supermarket flyer. Curves, lines, instinctive gestures… until Carolina moved. That slight twitch brought me back to the present, but something had been born in those lines. I didn’t know what it was yet.
Only that evening, leaning on the balcony with a Toscano cigar between my fingers, did I understand. Those shapes drawn without thinking held an idea: Carolina. A lamp that would not just be light, but breath. Inspired by ultrasound images, made of two overlapping layers that chase one another like waves: a tribute to genesis, to growth, to birth..
Back in Romania, I built the first prototype with my own hands. When I switched it on for the first time, it was like seeing her again: Carolina.
This lamp is you.
A gesture of love, a piece that breathes with your presence.
The most beautiful light I’ve ever created.
